I have worked with a number of people who request advice on how to prepare for the PMP exam. I achieved my certifications quite a few years ago, however in speaking with recently certified PMs the formula I used still seems to work.
As you prepare yourself for the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification journey (or similar certification), I recommend that you consider your learning styles. Understanding how you learn will be very useful as you study the material. The Seven Learning Styles are:
- Visual (spatial):You prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding
- Aural (auditory-musical): You prefer using sound and music
- Verbal (linguistic): You prefer using words, both in speech and writing
- Physical (kinesthetic): You prefer using your body, hands and sense of touch
- Logical (mathematical): You prefer using logic, reasoning and systems
- Social (interpersonal): You prefer to learn in groups or with other people
- Solitary (intrapersonal): You prefer to work alone and use self-study
My proposed approach is:
- Take a PMP Prep course
- Read the PMBOK
- Review the material in other books
- Use study groups
- Practise exam questions
Take a PMP Prep course
I found that taking a prep course (e.g. PMI SOC PMP Prep course) is a good way to evaluate any gaps in your learning. The reality is that not all companies execute their projects as outlined in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). You need to ensure that you are prepared for questions that may test you outside of your work experience.
Read the PMBOK
It is a good idea to review the relevant version of the PMBOK a few times before the exam, especially those areas that may not align with you experience.
Review the Material in Other Books
There are a number of books that are comprehensive one to assist you in your preparation such as Rita Mulcahy PMP Exam Prep. I found that such books assist with providing more context to the information in the PMBOK.
Use Study Groups
In my preparation I found that working a group of people that shared a common goal very helpful. My study group supported me in a number if areas that worked with my learning styles.
Practise Exam Questions
I found that simulating the exam conditioned was very useful. Time management is critical in taking an exam. Even though understanding the material is very important. You need to answer the necessary questions within the alloted time.
Hopefully, this approach will assist you in become a PMP. Please share your thoughts even if you disagree.
